New drugs for ulcerative colitis

The options for the more severe spectrum of ulcerative colitis has increased significantly. There is the real prospect of preventing surgery (colectomy) for many patients.
The new drugs include vedolizumab, ustekinumab and tofacitinib. The list will grow quickly with many likely candidates in clinical trials. Funding will take time but progress will be made soon. Adalimumab may be funded for ulcerative colitis soon and this will be a first step to more effective treatment for the more severe cases of UC.
